Welcome to the website of the Systems-Approach to Understanding the Nutrient Cycle Across the Pork Ecosystem research grant funded by the National Pork Board. This is a product of a 5-year, on-going effort involving faculty and staff from Iowa State University, University of Minnesota, Kansas State University, North Carolina State, IFEEDER and previously Iowa Select Farms, led by Dr Laura Greiner at Iowa State University. This website hosts all of the materials created by the grant, as well as other valuable resources. Below, you will find a circularity diagram created by our consortium, highlighting components of LCAs we find critical to focus on for swine production.
The objective of this project is to:
-
- Create values that can be used within the life cycle assessment of nutrients used within the swine industry to better assess nutrient recycling and efficiency
- Phases:
- 1a – Literature review with summary tables demonstrating known information and knowledge gaps for each portion of the nutrient cycle for all 10 regions of the US
- 1b – Identify current and upcoming technology to improve nutrient utilization within their portion of the nutrient cycle
- 2a – Ingredients and the values from phase 1b will be uploaded into the GFLI database to establish GHG, N and P emission factors
- 2b – Approach the gap in nutrient information by region and address appropriately
- Phases:
- Create values that can be used within the life cycle assessment of nutrients used within the swine industry to better assess nutrient recycling and efficiency
This project has been sponsored fully or in part by the National Pork Board.
