The presentation provides an overview of the tool with a demo and discuss how it can be used by NRCS field staff and others in evaluating and tracking effectiveness of conservation practices in improving water quality over time and space. This presentation was originally broadcast on March 7, 2014. More… Continue reading “Water Quality Index for Agricultural Runoff Tool”
The 4Rs of Nutrient Stewardship
This webinar discusses the 4R’s of Nutrient Stewardship (Right Source, Right Rate, Right Time and Right Place), how the Ohio State University Extension is developing programs and research to clean up Lake Erie and Grand Lake St. Mary’s, and how industry professionals are embracing the 4R’s. This presentation was originally broadcast on November 30, 2012. More… Continue reading “The 4Rs of Nutrient Stewardship”
Microbes: From Farm to Public Risk
The movement of bacteria and viruses from AFOs, municipal waste water, septic systems, and wildlife continues to complicate water quality throughout the country and world. Though much has been learned in recent years, misconceptions and unknown areas still abound. This webinar discussed the latest trends in microbial source tracking efforts, fate and transport of bacteria in the environment, and quantitative microbial risk assessment. This presentation was originally broadcast on October 19, 2012. More… Continue reading “Microbes: From Farm to Public Risk”
Nitrates in Groundwater
Nitrate issues from a regional perspective will be discussed in this webcast. Recent findings in California and the proposed solutions will be presented, as will nitrate issues in the Southeast, Midwest, and Intermountain West. This presentation was originally broadcast on May 18, 2012. More… Continue reading “Nitrates in Groundwater”
Proper Closure of Earthen Manure Storage Structures
When confined animal facilities cease operation, earthen manure storage and treatment structures must be closed properly to ensure that they pose little risk to the environment. This presentation was originally broadcast on October 21, 2011. More… Continue reading “Proper Closure of Earthen Manure Storage Structures”
National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS) Selected Results and Discussion of Their Significance
This webcast highlights the findings of the National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS). The purpose of the NAEMS was to measure emissions of regulated gases from representative livestock and poultry facilities across the U.S. and improve the state of knowledge of agricultural air emissions, especially in the context of prospective regulation of those emissions. This webcast was originally broadcast on September 16, 2011. More… Continue reading “National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS) Selected Results and Discussion of Their Significance”
Spreading Manure In Winter. What Are the Risks?
This archive was recorded from a live presentation at the 2011 North American Manure Expo. Kevan Klingberg, University of Wisconsin Discovery Farms discusses how application of manure nutrients on frozen and snow-covered soils became such a hot issue. He also explains their research program that monitors surface water quality on commercial farms. Lastly, he discusses the results of the research and how that information is being used to make management decisions on farms. Note: The recording volume was set high on these segments. Start with your speaker volume on low and move it louder if needed. Originally broadcast July 20, 2011. Continue reading “Spreading Manure In Winter. What Are the Risks?”
Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures
If your farm stores oil, fuel, or oil products, you should take note of the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) program. This rule applies to storages of a certain size and places some planning requirements on the farm. Speakers also discuss the proposed exemption for certain milk containers.
Reminder: Farms now must amend and implement their Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans. The compliance date for farms is May 10, 2013.
NOTE: This presentation was originally broadcast on November 19, 2010 and the speakers discuss a proposed exemption for certain milk containers. On April 18, 2011, EPA published a final rule amending the SPCC regulations to exempt milk and milk product containers, associated piping and appurtenances. The capacity of the exempt milk and milk product containers, piping and appurtenances should not be included in a facility’s total oil storage capacity calculation to determine if the facility is subject to SPCC. For more information on the milk exemption, see EPA’s SPCC and milk page. Continue reading “Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures”
Water Quality Grab Bag: Composting, Horse Farm Manure Management, Nutrient Losses from Litter Stockpiles
The first “road trip” for the webcast series. These were webcast live from the 2010 National Water Quality Conference Meeting. The presentations include: increasing on-farm composting capacity, horse farm best management practices, and nutrient losses from poultry litter stockpiles. This was originally broadcast on February 24, 2010. More… Continue reading “Water Quality Grab Bag: Composting, Horse Farm Manure Management, Nutrient Losses from Litter Stockpiles”
Manure Nutrients, Cover Crops, and Slurry Seeding
Cover crops are being promoted as a way to keep manure nutrients from leaching or running off during ‘idle’ months in the field. Coupling manure application and cover crops: Can it work and what are the benefits? This presentation was originally broadcast on January 15, 2010. More… Continue reading “Manure Nutrients, Cover Crops, and Slurry Seeding”
